With all of the nice weather and melting snow we are having, we will begin to see people returning to all of their favorite outdoor activities under the sun! Soon enough.

One of those activities is pickleball. Pickleball is an increasingly popular sport that continues to gain traction across all ages and levels of athleticism. This is my favorite part. People are recognizing the invitation that pickleball provides in the form of inclusion and convenience of picking up a paddle and getting outside. ANYONE CAN PLAY!

I was first introduced to pickleball this prior December and my eyes have been opened to how popular this sport has become in our community. Leagues fill up quickly. Every event is full. And I have since got my friends and family to join in as well! As a physical therapist, my eyes have also been wide open to the (low) risks of injury!

Pickleball is a low-impact sport that is generally safe and easy on the body. However, as with any physical activity, there is always a risk of pain or injury. Common injuries in pickleball include calf or Achilles strains, ankle sprains, knee pain, lower back injuries, and wrist, shoulder or elbow tendinitis.

It is important to take precautions to prevent injuries, such as:

  • Warming up properly before playing
  • Using proper technique and knowing your limits
  • Wearing appropriate shoes and protective gear
  • Easing into the sport as the weather continues to improve outside – avoiding multiple-hour pickleball benders the moment the court clears to avoid overuse injuries

The Fargo area has ample opportunity to get out and play organized pickleball from casual gatherings to tournaments. You can play whichever way suits you best by getting out with like-minded players or by checking out the Fargo-Moorhead Pickleball Club to see all available locations and organized events.
